Bitcoin halving: when is the next one and how it affects the reward
The halving cuts the Bitcoin block reward in half every ~4 years. We break down the dates, the current reward and what it means for mining.
What is the halving
Every 210,000 blocks (about 4 years) the Bitcoin block subsidy is cut in half. This way fewer new coins enter the network — there will be no more than 21M in total. The current reward is 3.125 BTC (since April 2024); the next halving will cut it to 1.5625 BTC.
Halving history
- 2009 — 50 BTC
- 2012 — 25 BTC
- 2016 — 12.5 BTC
- 2020 — 6.25 BTC
- 2024 — 3.125 BTC
- ~2028 — 1.5625 BTC
What it means for mining
After the halving the reward for a found block decreases, but the dollar value of each block has historically often grown along with the price. In solo mining you still take the whole block. Find out how much a block is worth today and estimate your chances.
